The Association of Roma Women "Bolja buducnost" Tuzla in cooperation with the Roma women;s network "Uspjeh" organized a visit to the Donja Gradina memorial on August 2nd. August 2 is marked as the International Holocaust Remembrance Day. On that day in 1944, the Nazis sent 2,897 Roma to the gas chambers in the Auschwitz camp. This date has also been accepted by the Council of Europe and is celebrated throughout Europe. It is estimated that more than 500,000 Roma were killed during World War II, but the final number will never be determined. At the site of the suffering of Jews, Serbs, anti-fascists and others in Donja Gradina, there is a mass grave in which the then NDH buried about 40,000 Roma men and women of all ages killed with mallets, daggers, axes, hammers, ropes and other means. Of the 40,000 Roma brutally executed, most were children, women and the elderly.By marking this date, we pay tribute to and remember the victims of the Second World War, as well as other innocent victims, and we invite you to join us in our efforts to ensure that innocent victims, as well as crime, are never forgotten or repeated.
